Royal Air Force
On 1st April 1918, the Royal Air Force was formed from the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Navy equivalent,
the RN Air Service. If the soldier or seaman was discharged before the formation of the RAF his personal
records will be in WO 364, WO 363 or ADM 188. Otherwise his records will be in AIR 79, (AIR 76 for officers).

There are many operational records in the National Archives for WW1 in AIR 1 and in WW2, (AIR 24 to AIR 28)
for the various Commands, (Balloon, Bomber, Fighter, Coastal, Overseas etc) which were later formed.
Other interesting records include Advanced Operations in France, (1939-40) in AIR 35, Intelligence
Reports in AIR 40 and Combat Reports in AIR 50.
For more information read the various leaflets at the National Archives web site.
