Before becoming an independent researcher at the National Archives, Bob spent 35 years in the British Civil Service at Government Communications Headquarters, (GCHQ - successor to GCCS), where he was involved in the handling of UK Government records, so the PRO HW Class List has a particularly familiar feel. The National Archivs describes the HW 1 Class as follows:- " This series contains summaries of selected signal intelligence reports sent to the Prime Minister several times each day during the Second World War and includes:- "Reports relating to enemy ground and air forces in Europe derived from high grade cyphers such as ENIGMA. Summaries of Spanish, German, Italian and Japanese naval activity. Selected translations of intercepted diplomatic telegrams." Prior to service with GCHQ, Bob spent 10 years in the Royal Navy and served in operations such as Suez, thus he played a part in the creation of some of the ADM records which we now search.
