Australian Convict Records

There are now some useful websites which can be searched online free of charge. These will give some details of Australian Convicts. With these details it is then possible to trace backwards and find their trial records in the HO (Home Office) and ASSI (Assizes) collections. These records vary in the amount of detail they contain, but they will usually give details of the crime, the age of the convict, his ability to read and write and the place where the offence took place. More serious offences usually give more extensive details with witness statements.

Once the name and date of the ship on which the convict arrived has been ascertained it is also usually possible to find records of the Hulk on which he was held before he was transported. There are also some medical records which were completed by ships' surgeons. These give details of all those who were sick or who died on the journey to Australia.
